My name is Reiko Huang, a singer-songwriter focused on infusing music with cultural expression. Growing up in China and now embraced by the vibrant music scene in the United States, I am proud of my intercultural identity. I am currently pursuing dual degrees in Independent Artist Songwriting and Vocal Performance at the Musicians Institute.
My musical journey started in childhood, where I immersed myself in both traditional Chinese music and modern pop. During high school, I developed skills in traditional Chinese folk vocal and bel canto, which led to my acceptance into Xinghai Conservatory of Music, one of China's top ten music schools. At 18, frequent attendance at music festivals and concerts deeply inspired me to explore music and pursue it as a career. I earned a silver medal at the 11th International Youth Performance Art Festival and Music Competition in 2017 and achieved second place in the Guangdong Province division of "The Voice of China" in 2019, ranking among the top ten nationwide. I also had the honor of opening for the acclaimed singer Tia Ray at the 15th Shanghai Jazz Festival, which featured performances by artists such as Jacob Collier, Lalah Hathaway, and The Earth Wind & Fire Experience featuring The Al McKay Allstars.
With a deep love for contemporary pop music, I moved to Los Angeles to further my studies at the Musicians Institute. There, I found a nurturing environment that recognized and celebrated my talents. My academic path has been enriched by guidance from exceptional mentors, including vocal coach Debra Byrd, producer Arthur Pochon, and Grammy-winning engineer and producer Francis Buckley. These mentors have refined my abilities and provided me with new inspirations and endless possibilities.
My musical style encompasses a blend of folk-pop, bedroom pop, alternative indie pop, and R&B. I released my debut single "Ice-Cold Lemonade" on September 24, 2023, followed by my second single "Harbor" on December 12, 2023, and my third single "Dreaming" on March 31, 2024. Through my songs, I paint a vivid narrative of an everyday girl's innermost feelings, capturing moments of introspection, life's perplexities, and a steadfast passion for love. I take on the roles of singer, songwriter, and producer in these creations. On May 25, 2024, I performed my first all-original show with my band Draft Planets at the Sherman Oaks Backyard Show.
My approach to music is experimental and open-minded, always eager to incorporate elements that enhance my songs. I am thrilled to be working with Grammy-winning engineer and producer Francis Buckley on my debut album, which I cannot wait to share with everyone. Furthermore, I will continue to perform with my band Dwarf Planet in various venues around LA.
